Adam ZorganiLocated a five-minute walk from Tottenham Court Road and situated within the recently refurbished Sir Edward Lutchen’s-designed Bloomsbury Hotel, The Coral Room and salon bar is a notable re-imagining of what was once just a hotel lobby.
Reworking a Grade II listed thoroughfare to a cocktail destination is no simple feat but Martin Brudnizki’s interior scheme has more than achieved this at The Coral Room. There are simple yet effectively-painted coral walls within the double height space and in amongst a range of tasteful art-deco furniture sits the bar. A giant slab of stunning Calacatta marble, backed with evocative brass fittings and an antique mirrored background, it looks as if it could have been plucked from the first class deck of a White Star Liner.
Overseen by General Manager, Giovanni Spezziga – formerly of Scarfes Bar at the Rosewood London – there’s an extensive English sparkling wine list at The Coral Room with an emphasis on local vineyards, alongside a comprehensive selection of highball and spritz-style cocktails with names that reflect the culture of both the countryside and the city.
Something of a modern nod to the speakeasy 1920’s, highlights on the cocktail menu include: Midtown Swizzle – Havana Club Anejo Especial Rum, Lustau sherry, passion fruit puree, lime juice, pineapple syrup and English sparkling wine (£15); Big Smoke – Ancho Reyes liqueur, Quiquiriqui Mezcal, orange chilli syrup, chipotle tincture and ginger ale (£13).
A selection of small plates crafted by executive chef, Byron Moussouris are also available throughout the day and offer the perfect accompaniment to a crisp glass of wine or bespoke cocktail.
The menu (available from 11:00am to 10:30pm) features dishes such as Chicory Salad –walnuts, pear, Cashel Blue cheese and honey and mustard dressing (£8.00); Seared Tuna with wasabi mayo (£11.00) and Lobster & Crayfish Mac’n’Cheese (£12.00). For those looking to indulge their sweet tooth, a decadent Chocolate Eclair (£6.00) and indulgent chocolate truffles (£4.00) are available on the sweet menu.
With an ambience that is glamorous yet unpretentious with a chic outside terrace, The Coral Room is one to try this summer.
